Himalaya" is a Sanskrit word which literally means "Abode of Snow" - from hima, "snow," and alaya, "abode".
However in tamil, it is called imayamalai where malai stands for hill or mountain.
imayam itself indicates himalayas. If anyone knows the meaning of tamil word "imayam" please let me know.
