Is India a country ?

The recent general election in India is perhaps the most revolutionary election ever held in the world. It is so revolutionary that we have elected a foriegner to be the head of the state. This is simply not possible in any democracies in the world the today, including the "freedom" thumpeters. In India it is constitutionally legal and people dont seem to mind being ruled by an "elected" foriegner. We have elected a foriegn born woman to become the prime-minister of India, who has not done any service to India except being the wife of former Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi. Many say this is the rise of Nehru-Gandhi dynasty to rule India once again.

Eventhough I was born and Lived in India for a longtime, it is impossible to predict elections in India.

Lets look at some of the interesting things about the "Rise of Gandhi Dynasty".

Sonia and his Son Rahul were elected from Rea Barelli and Amethi constituencies in Uttar Pradesh ( Indira Gandhi and Rajeev Gandhi were elected from Amethi before ). Uttar Predesh is one of the poorest states and their party "congress" has won only 9 seats out of 80 in UP.

The biggest chunck of DPA (coaltion of congress) seats came in south from AP and TN totalling 34+40 = 74 out of 212 they have won. Strangely These 2 states have gained significantly from BJPs reforms in the last 5 years. The prescence of congress in Tamil Nadu is almost zero. It can be argued and perhaps proved that congress cannot even win 1 seat of out of 40 in TN without their alliance with DMK, PMK and MDMK. The politics in TN never reflected that of the center and it is always been local. The DMK and allies made use of the anti-incumbancy factor against the ruling AIADMK. Ironically the most number of seats for congress came from a state where they had virtually no presence.

I spoke to several people who had no intention of making sonia gandhi the prime minister, have voted for her indirectly.

Neither do most poeple care about who is ruling from Delhi. In most cases it is just irrelevent.

By looking at these facts, can India be called a country just on the geographical basis?

If we take a count of seats congress (144) and BJP (137) won , they together represent only 50% of India. As more and more Indians are getting educated the national parties seem to shrink. At this point not even half of India is educated. Since Indian parents are considering education as the most important priority for their children, we will have a nation of educated people in 20-25 years by now. I dread the day when 60-70% of india is Educated.

Still, is there a way to find what is india? Can we ever understand India?

India has opened the world to the new realm of rule by an elected foriegner.
or rather give the rule to anyone from anywhere ?
Will it have any positive effect on the rest of the world?

But there is a lot of hope in India.

Almost all governments which ruled India after VPSingh ( 1989 ) have done better than their predecessors. But none of the rulers were from the Gandhi clan. So this is a good chance for the gandhi clan to prove their worthiness to India.

I used to say India is not a country and it never existed before. Is it so hard to believe this? India is fragmented by many languages and castes. Perhaps the most uniting part of India is its spiritual belief.

All Indians ( hindus, muslims, chirstians, etc ) have common beliefs and perform their religous duties the indian way.

Now in the in face of globalization, where we look for cooperation across the globe, the exchange of Ideas, thoughts are becoming easier. Today we deal with people we have never met and probably will never meet. This is the the trust that makes today's world work.
